Mascún is the canyon for those who love the architecture of a gorge as much as the sport. Towering rock needles, natural arches and a long, scenic corridor make the lower Mascún a spectacular, mostly walking descent with a few short aquatic obstacles. It is a fine introduction to the scale of the Sierra de Guara.

Highlights

  • Dramatic rock needles and natural arches
  • Mostly walking with short aquatic passages
  • Warm water and a sunny, open canyon
  • Great for mixed-ability groups

The approach

The route starts near the village of Rodellar, a short walk from the road, and the day finishes back in the valley.

The descent

Much of Mascún is walking and easy scrambling through a magnificent corridor, with a handful of short rappels and swims. It is one of the gentler ways to experience a big Guara canyon, suitable for confident beginners.

Good to know

  • Long day on foot — pace yourself in the heat
  • Low water late summer makes it gentler still
  • Rodellar is also a famous climbing village — book ahead
