Claustral is the Blue Mountains canyon that experienced canyoneers travel across the world to descend. A long day leads into a deep, dark slot — including the famous constriction known as the Black Hole of Calcutta — where the walls close in and daylight nearly vanishes. It is committing, cold and utterly memorable.

Highlights

  • The famous 'Black Hole of Calcutta' constriction
  • A deep, dark, atmospheric slot
  • A committing, no-quick-exit descent
  • A world-renowned Blue Mountains classic

The approach

A long bushwalk through the plateau and a steep descent lead to the canyon. The full day, including the walk out, demands fitness and navigation.

The descent

Abseils into cold, dark pools and tight constrictions define the route. Escape is difficult once committed, so settled weather, a strong team and reliable rope skills are essential. The atmosphere in the deepest slot is unlike anywhere else.

Good to know

  • Never enter with unsettled weather — flash-flood terrain
  • Cold water and low light; wetsuit and torch needed
  • Long, committing day for experienced parties only
