Twister and Rocky Creek are frequently linked into one of the Blue Mountains' best beginner days: lush fern gardens, glow-worm grottoes, a couple of short abseils and plenty of swimming, all without serious commitment. It is the route that introduces most Sydneysiders to the magic of slot canyons.

Highlights

  • Lush fern gardens and sculpted sandstone
  • Short, beginner-friendly abseils
  • Often combined into a scenic two-canyon loop
  • Close to Sydney for a weekend trip

The approach

A pleasant bushwalk from the Bells Line of Road area leads to the canyons, with a walk-out track returning to the start.

The descent

Expect a couple of short abseils, swims through cool pools and easy scrambling between beautiful fern-lined walls. The water is cold year-round, so a wetsuit keeps it enjoyable, but nothing here is committing.

Good to know

  • Cold water; a wetsuit is needed even in summer
  • Fragile fern gardens — stay on route and leave no trace
  • Best after stable weather; avoid when rain threatens
