The upper Furon is one of the Vercors' great teaching canyons. A short drive from Grenoble, it offers exactly what a learner needs: short, well-equipped rappels, a few optional jumps, and easy escapes if confidence wavers. Generations of canyoneers have taken their first abseil on falling water here.

Highlights

  • Ideal first-rappel terrain
  • Optional small jumps to build confidence
  • Short and close to the city
  • Easy escapes throughout

The approach

A short walk-in from the road leads quickly to the first obstacles. The proximity to Grenoble makes it a popular after-work or half-day outing.

The descent

The canyon links a series of short rappels, none longer than around twelve metres, with optional jumps that can all be bypassed. The water is cool, so a wetsuit keeps the day comfortable, but nothing here is sustained or committing.

Good to know

  • Busy with clubs on summer evenings
  • Lower Furon section is more committing — don't confuse them
  • Flow rises quickly after rain
