Above the northern shore of Lake Garda, the Rio Nero offers one of the area's most rewarding sporty descents: a vertical canyon of clean rappels, narrow corridors and the occasional jump, all with the lake glittering far below. It pairs perfectly with a climbing or biking trip to the Garda region.

Highlights

  • Big, clean rappels in a vertical canyon
  • Dramatic views over Lake Garda
  • A varied, energetic descent
  • Easy to combine with a Garda holiday

The approach

A walk-in from the trailhead above the lake leads to the canyon entry; the exit returns down the valley to the start.

The descent

The Rio Nero is more vertical than aquatic: a series of rappels up to around thirty metres, linked by short corridors and easy swims. Confident abseiling is the key skill; the water, while cool, is rarely the main obstacle.

Good to know

  • More vertical than wet — solid rappel skills needed
  • Afternoon storms are common over Garda in summer
  • Popular with guided groups in peak season
