Sa Fosca — 'the dark one' — is one of Europe's most atmospheric canyons: a deep, narrow slot in the Torrent de Pareis system where daylight barely reaches and head-torches become essential. It is committing, cold and serious, with long sections where the only way is forward. A bucket-list descent for experienced canyoneers.

Highlights

  • A near-lightless slot requiring head-torches
  • Extraordinary atmosphere unlike any other canyon
  • Committing, no-escape character
  • A genuine Mediterranean classic

The approach

A long mountain walk-in leads to the entry high in the Tramuntana range. The logistics are involved and the day is long — plan conservatively.

The descent

Once in, escape is effectively impossible until the exit. Cold pools, dark rappels and tight passages demand a strong, autonomous team, reliable lighting and absolute confidence with rope. This is not a place to learn — it is a place to apply hard-won experience.

Good to know

  • Never attempt with any rain in the forecast
  • Head-torch and full self-rescue capability mandatory
  • Cold water even in summer; go in spring or autumn for flow
