The Saxetenbach is a classic Swiss alpine canyon: cold, fast and stunningly carved through grey rock near Interlaken. Its aquatic character and powerful water make it a serious sporty descent, and its history is a permanent reminder of why flash-flood discipline matters above all else in this sport.

Highlights

  • Sculpted grey alpine rock
  • Strongly aquatic, energetic descent
  • Spectacular Bernese Oberland setting
  • A true alpine-canyon atmosphere

The approach

The approach leads from the Saxeten valley to the canyon entry on maintained paths, with a short walk back out at the end.

The descent

Cold water and forceful flow define the day: rappels beside powerful falls, swims in chilly pools and slides where the current does the work. Thick neoprene is essential, and reading the weather is not optional.

Good to know

  • Flash-flood history here — never enter with unsettled weather upstream
  • Very cold water; bring thick neoprene and a hood
  • Often run commercially; go with people who know it
Before you go. Grades and conditions change with water levels and seasons. Treat this page as orientation, not a route topo, and go with people who know the canyon or a qualified guide. Read the safety basics first.
